In ancient inscriptions, it is mentioned as Kulilangere, Kunilangere Sarvanamsya Agrahara Kunilangere, Bhattagrama Kunilangere. This town, which was an important educational center and a major river station, was previously part of Hagartagi-300, and 26 inscriptions have been reported from here so far. Of the inscriptions scattered everywhere in this town, 24 are from the time of the Chalukya kings of Kalyana. Among these, the inscription of 1052 mentions donations made to the ascetics and merchants of Bibbeshwara, while the inscription, which dates back to the time of Jagadeka Malla, mentions the donation made by Singanadasi, a feudatory of Rebbararasara, to the Sarveshwara deva she had made in Kulilangere, and to the Kelva tapas who studied there, and mentions the Bibbeshwara deva. The inscription of 1088 dates back to the reign of Vikramaditya VI, the Chalukya king of Kalyana, and mentions the donation of the Ireyura Gounda Kereyanur to the deva Rudreshwara in the presence of the great people. Another inscription of 1125 mentions that merchants donated several taxes to this deva. The inscription of 1105 standing near the Jokumara well here tells us that during the festival of the Tulaba of Tribhuvan Malla, Malaladevi, the sister of Vikramaditya VI, in the presence of Chandradevi (the venerable Chandralaparameshwari), donated land in 48 Gena Kola of Maginagere as a gift to Mahadevanna, the son of Hampa Kavi of Bhattagram Kunilangere during her reign, while Brahmadevara donated land to Kesava Devar of the well of Hokkarane. The inscription of 1080 belonging to the time of Vikramaditya VI, located in front of the Nageshwara temple here, tells us that Nageshwara was an important trading center for Dandanayaka Mahavishnu Devarasaru, the senior commander of Kunilangere. Three Jain inscriptions have been reported from here so far, all of which are Nishidhi inscriptions, and the site of the Jain temple is now completely exposed.
