Kanaganhalli (Sannati) Bouddha Stupa

Another famous Buddhist monument is found in Sannati, situated in Chittapur near the temple of Chandrala Paramewswari located on the banks of river Bheema. The

Archeological Survey of India during its excavations between 1994 and 2001 discovered the remains of a unique Maha Stupa at Kanaganahalli, 3 kms from Sannati, dating back to 3rd century BC. Inscriptions refer to it as the Adholoka Maha-chaitya-the Great Stupa of the Netherworlds. A rare portrait of great Mauryan Emperor Ashoka, labeled as ‘Ranyo Ashoka (King Ashoka) written in brahmi script, found on an inscription here, is the only one of its kind in India. A Granite slab inscribed with Ashokan edicts speaking of religious tolerance and concern for human kind is similar to those found in Kalinga (Orissa).
